You can't truly know God without FIRST comprehending His mercy…

And by 'comprehending His mercy', I mean His mercy specifically toward YOU/YOUR sins/YOUR lawless deeds (AND His outright refusal to remember any of it!).

‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭8‬:‭10‬-‭12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel After those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, And write them in their hearts: And I will be to them a God, And they shall be to me a people:

11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, And every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: For all shall know me, From the least to the greatest.

12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, And their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

With the understanding that "for" means "because", looking at the emphasis (bolding), it’s clear that the reason we’re granted the opportunity to know God is directly predicated on His mercy. His mercy toward our unrighteousness & lawlessness, to be specific.

We will know God to the extent that we understand that:

  1. He will be merciful to our unrighteousness
  2. Our sins and lawlessness He will NEVER recall

It thus stands to reason that, the extent to which we question and doubt these 2 points of God’s declaration, God —everything He is, everything He stands for— will elude our comprehension and understanding.

And what is the danger of that? Well…

John 17:3 KJV

And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

Looks like our eternal life is somehow wrapped up in our knowing God. But more on that at a later time (once I’ve done more studying and receive a revelation about how it all comes together). For now, let's just take into consideration just how much of a priority He has made it that we understand the depth of His unwillingness to hold our unrighteousness & lawless deeds against us. He could've made it so that this comprehension of His mercy toward us was something you need not focus on until much later in the process of deepening your relation with Him. But no, He made it so that you can't get to the 'steak-&-potatoes' (the richness) of your relationship with Him unless you first understand just how deeply you have been forgiven of your past unrighteousness, as well as any present & future inclination to lawlessness ("will I remember no more"). He made it a PRIORITY! Because your awareness of how blameless you are in Christ means THAT much to Him.
